PSU head coach Erica Walsh (middle, left) helped the US squad claim the gold medal in women’s soccer. Walsh was an assistant to head coach Pia Sundhage. The US women defeated Brazil in a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory to successfully defend the Olympic gold that they won in Athens in 2004.
The PSU soccer team begins their season Saturday in Williamsburg VA as the Nittany Lions take on William and Mary. Walsh is expected to take the long flight back from Beijing today and to meet up with her squad in time to lead them in the contest against W&M.

According to the Pittsburgh Press, Friedman and Lea got off to a good start but Lea’s legs just gave out on him in the 200km Madison race.

The rout ends Jagla’s Olympics as the Germans fail to qualify for the medal round. Jagla was 4-10 (2-6) for ten points.

Barber does set new national record for Trinidad in her heat however.

Jagla and the Germans lost to Yao Ming and the Chinese team in a game that basically determined who the fourth team would be to advance out of pool play.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Friedman and Lea got off to a good start but Lea’s legs just gave out on him in the 200km Madison race. Forced to carry much of the teams racing load during rest of the race, Friedman never really had an opportunity to score and the team gradually fell to the back of the pack.
In a related story, Lea and Friedman were extremely critical of the US Olympic committee saying that they were thrown under the bus by the committee regarding the whole mask controversy the team faced upon their arrival in Beijing.
The story as filed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette paints a sad portrait of the Olympics. Friedman say he only did what he was told and the result was he got over 15,000 emails criticising him. He said his Olympics were ruined by the experience.

Recent PSU grad Robert Rohanna tees it up this morning on the famed Pinehurst Resort in the US Amateur championship. 315 golfers have qualified for the championships. After two rounds of medal play, one each on the Pinehurst #2 and #4 course, the field will be cut to the low 64 rounds for match play starting Wednesday Aug 20th. All matches will be 18 holes except for the 36 hole final schedule for Sunday.
