McDonough captures the prestigious Met Amateur for the second time. His victory was also the second consecutive Metropolitan Golf Assocation title to be won by a Penn State golfer as teammate Kevin Foley captured the Met Ike Championships earlier this summer.

According to this NY Times report, Mike Friedman and Bobby Lea, among others caused quite a controversy when they wore masks upon their arrival in Beijing.
They cyclists were surprised by the press reaction since a USOC official had recommended wearing them as soon as they arrived.
Friedman was quoted as saying “This is really a surprise, because I didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal. Why we wore the masks is simple: pollution. When you train your whole life for something, dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s, why wouldn’t you be better safe than sorry?”

2001 PSU Alum Toyin Augustus will race in Beijing representing Nigeria in the 100m hurdles. Toyin was the 2006 All African hurdle champ and the 2008 runner up. Toyin was born in Nigeria and although she move to the US as a child she maintains Nigerian citizenship.

Sophomore Kevin Foley carded a three round 6-under 207 to take home the 53rd Ike Championship hosted by the Metropolitan Golf Association.

Aleesha Barber will run the 100 meter hurdles for Trinidad and Tobago in the Olympic Games. Aleesha will be the second PSU women ever to run in the Olympics.

Penn State junior Casey Sandy was named the male Student Sthlete of the Year for Penn State. Casey’s name will now be submitted to the Big Ten as Penn State’s candidate for the Big Ten’s Jesse Owens coveted Athlete of the Year honor.
