Walsh was an assistant to head coach Pia Sundhage. The US women defeated Brazil in a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory to successfully defend the Olympic gold that they won in Athens in 2004.

The PSU soccer team begins their season Saturday in Williamsburg VA as the Nittany Lions take on William and Mary. Walsh is expected to take the long flight back from Beijing today and to meet up with her squad in time to lead them in the contest against W&M.

Forced to carry much of the teams racing load during rest of the race, Friedman never really had an opportunity to score and the team gradually fell to the back of the pack.

In a related story, Lea and Friedman were extremely critical of the US Olympic committee saying that they were thrown under the bus by the committee regarding the whole mask controversy the team faced upon their arrival in Beijing.

The story as filed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette paints a sad portrait of the Olympics. Friedman say he only did what he was told and the result was he got over 15,000 emails criticising him. He said his Olympics were ruined by the experience.

After two rounds of medal play, one each on the Pinehurst #2 and #4 course, the field will be cut to the low 64 rounds for match play starting Wednesday Aug 20th. All matches will be 18 holes except for the 36 hole final schedule for Sunday.

Jagla looked about as good as you can when you lose by 50. Without waiting for the box score, I’d say he had about eight points on about 3-9 shooting (2-6 from beyond the arc), stuffed Dwayne Wade drawing oohs and awes from the crowd when Wade tried to drive on him, and made some nice passes. On the other hand, he floated around the arc too much and was a passive rebounder.

Found a box: Jagla was 4-10 (2-6) for ten points – second leading scorer for the Germans behind Nowitski’s 14. Also the second leading rebounder with six behind Nowitski’s eight.

Toyin Augustus finished seventh in her heat and failed to advance to the Olympic semifinals.

Barber dashed to a 13:01 new national record for Trinidad while coming in fourth in her heat. Barber’s time was good for 18th overall. Unfortunately, only the top 16 advance to the semifinals.

Earlier in the day, the US had knocked of the #2 and #3 seeds in Poland and Hungary but the #1 seed Russians proved to be too much for them. After the first series of three matches the US was actually tied with the Russians but quickly fell out of contention when the Russian fencers took 15 off the next 16 touches.

Unfortunately, Doris Willette, who was the team alternate, did not get into a match and thus she will not get a medal.

She slipped on the wet field when the US scored a goal to go up 1-0. Canada later tied it up 1-1 but the US squad won with a score in the overtime period.

That moved the Poles into the championship round where they lost to France 45-29. The silver medal was the first medal won by Poland in the Beijing Olympics.
