According to the Pittsburgh Press, Friedman and Lea got off to a good start but Lea’s legs just gave out on him in the 200km Madison race.

The United States women’s fencing team won the silver medal in the team foil competition after losing to Russia in the gold medal match Saturday at the Beijing Olympics.

Adam Wiercioch and the Polish mens epee fencing team won a dramatic 45-44 match over host China in a semifinal match moving them into the gold medal match where they lost to France.

Pau Gasol and the Spanish team rolled over Dirk Nowitski and the German team 72-59. Jagla had 5 points on 2-3 (1-2) shooting with 2 boards.

Beijing – Nontapat Panchan eliminated

PSU Alum and Thai fencer Nontapat Panchan was eliminated in the individual epee round of 32 by Slawomir Mocek of Poland. This was Panchan’s only event in Beijing so his Olympics are over.

The Canadian women’s soccer team fell to the Swedes 2-1. They finish Group Play at 1-1-1 and will advance to elimination play with their first round opponent being the United States.

The Greeks give notice that they’ll be a force to be dealt with as they destroy the Germans 87-64. Greece just shutdown the German stars holding Dirk Nowitski to 14 points and Chris Kaman to just 4. Jagla was also a non-factor he went 2-10 (0-3) for only 4 points.

In an outstanding performance, the US men’s gymnastics team overcame the loss of two of the star gymnast to claim a bronze medal in Beijing.

Coming into the last event, the US had a long shot at silver but Kevin faltered in his routine which eliminated their chance for the runner-up spot. Still coming from the early rotation in the preliminaries to medal was an incredible accomplishment for the team. Kevin led the team in scoring on the rings which was gave them a big lift in the scoring. Following their next event, the high bar, the US actually were in 1st place, although not for long since the Chinese and Japanese had their strongest events coming up.

Huge props to Kevin and his teammates.

BEIJING — Cheryl McLeod can’t decide whether to play hurt at the Summer Olympics or retreat to the safety of her hotel room to rest her frayed nerves.

“I’m not sure if I can take much more this,” Canada’s unofficial first soccer mom – at least for this week – said Sunday morning on the 338 km/hr bullet train from Tianjin to Beijing.

TIANJIN, China — Canada’s women’s soccer team could have wilted under the heat and humidity and stifling noise of the pro-Chinese crowd.

Instead, they turned the intense conditions in their favour Saturday, playing host China to a 1-1 draw to remain unbeaten at the Olympic Games.

Jagla shines in opening round win

The Germans won their opening round games against Angola handily 95-66. The Germans were led Chris Kamen with 24 points in 20 minutes while Dirk Nowitski contributed 23 points in 23 minutes. Jagla had 10 points on 4-7 (2-3) shooting and led all rebounders with 11.

Kevin Tan and men’s gym team advance to Olympic finals

The US men’s gymnastics team overcame the loss of the Hamm brothers to advance to the finals on Tuesday night as reported in this USA Today story.

Unfortunately, Kevin, who had never failed to score under 16.000 in all four Olympic qualifying rounds, stumbled slightly on his ring dismount and wound up with a 15.725. Tan, who was considered a possible medalist in this his favorite event missed out on making the finals by .025 but still led the team in scoring in the rings. He also failed to qualify in his other three event. He will however compete on Tuesday when the men try for the upset.

Canada wore down Argentina to win its Olympic debut 2-1 Wednesday, getting a goal in each half and using a significant size advantage to subdue the South Americans.

Lea and Friedman cause controversy in Beijing

According to this NY Times report, Mike Friedman and Bobby Lea, among others caused quite a controversy when they wore masks upon their arrival in Beijing.

They cyclists were surprised by the press reaction since a USOC official had recommended wearing them as soon as they arrived.

Friedman was quoted as saying “This is really a surprise, because I didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal. Why we wore the masks is simple: pollution. When you train your whole life for something, dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s, why wouldn’t you be better safe than sorry?”

Toyin Augustus claims 100m Olympic hurdle spot for Nigeria

2001 PSU Alum Toyin Augustus will race in Beijing representing Nigeria in the 100m hurdles. Toyin was the 2006 All African hurdle champ and the 2008 runner up. Toyin was born in Nigeria and although she move to the US as a child she maintains Nigerian citizenship.

Erin McLeod fulfills lifelong Olympic dream

Even at a young age McLeod seemed to sense her athletic career was on the soccer pitch. Before she even hit her teenage years she expressed a dream, not unlike other women on Canada’s Olympic soccer team, that some day she would play for the gold — even though women’s soccer wasn’t then in the Games.
